What fuels you?
I know we get a ton of mixed messages about food all the time and it is so tough caring sometimes about what we put in our bodies. The only thing I know for sure is that when I eat whole foods that taste like the earth, my body feels good and my brain works.
Today I had two meals I hate to eat:
cream cheese bagel and lipid-filled hot cocoa from 7-11
and
fried plantain chips and yogurt-apple trail mix from my local vending machine.
Time flowed and I flowed with it, but I definitely did not feel as clear in mind as I usually do. I definitely responded to student questions lethargically and spun around 1 too many times to place papers in piles they didn't need to be in. I definitely blurted things out in conversation that probably should have been held in my mind.
But instead, I chose to eat what I ate and therefore chose to be less than myself.
I like the days I eat things like I did tonight:
delicious Israeli couscous with sweet, red peppers and garlic in a yummy yogurt sauce
and
fresh cantaloupe.
Maybe my brain will function better in my dreams tonight. And with a husband who knows when I need fresh foods and fridge replenished, I am in for a great (hopefully snow-filled) day tomorrow.
guess the low-fat brownies I just pulled out of the oven will overrule the salmon and broccoli consumed for dinner... oh well. Thank goodness there is always tomorrow to try again :)
ReplyDeleteHmm. We ate tacos made with grass fed beef and organic cheese, topped with homemade organic salsa but I washed them down with two non-organic, fully alcoholic Cosmopolitans so I suppose I'm starting at zero...
ReplyDeleteGood thoughts to keep in mind. I should post this on my fridge. Or better yet, on my cupboard, where all the not-so-good food is.
ReplyDeleteLast night was an organic salad with different greens, tomatoes, cucumbers, and an olive oil based dressing (but then I added in some Doritos--tacky, I know). This was all followed by some smoked tofu and a peach. And THEN a few hours later, some homemade strawberry shortcake. Hey, I'm pregnant. :)
but bagels and cream cheese (with a little strawberry jam on top) are oh so tasty! You need one every once in a while, eh? But then again, fresh fruit is the best. I can't wait for our fruit to start tasting sweet again.
ReplyDeleteIs that a picture of Harrison, Celine? He sure is cute but that pic kinda makes me lose my appetite... tee hee.
ReplyDeleteI want to do a farm share this year but it's getting late in the game. I wish we lived closer, C, and could share a share! But alas, driving up or down the turnpike this summer to split our goods would kinda defeat the purpose of locally sourcing our foods!
If any of you are in need of a great read about eating locally, check out Barbara Kingsolver's 'Animal, Vegetable, Miracle'. Good stuff.
and Ps. Rene - I used to DIG PB&J&Doritos sandwiches when I was a kid and yes, I was one of those gross little youths who licked the Doritos cheese from every finger...
ReplyDeleteMmmm . . . Dorito cheesy fingers . . .
ReplyDeleteSimply Complex - I pretend that I am one of those people who only eats cretain fruits and vegetables when in season...but I can't deny it, I too wish for the sweetness, since I do know the "not so sweet" taste of the out of season, highly modified food.
