Truth and Beauty

I'm done smiling. Why?
Well, because after spending my teenage years
perfecting my pout, in my twenties I decided if I ever wanted
to capture the essence of the girls I admired, you know,
the ones who carried Holly Hobbie
lunch boxes as second graders,
(while I was sporting a KISS one,
complete with blood dripped thermos)
then I needed to start "turning my frown upside down" and acting like one.
(After all, those Holly Hobbiers always wore smiles
that perfectly accessorized their Golddigger jeans).

So, I started smiling more.
At first, it wasn't a big deal
because I was already smiling on the inside
(I guess I was just too lazy to ask
my happiness to manifest itself outside, too).
So I kept doing it.
Kept on a-smilin' in the faces of happiness, adversity,
misery, surprise, fear, anticipation, confusion:
didn't matter in what direction I was looking,
I smiled at what I saw.

BIG MISTAKE.
All that smiling?
Well, it may have worked
to brighten the days of others
but no good deed goes unpunished.
All of the years spent doing this:

have marked me like this:

Stick some Botox in me, I'm done!

  1. Ali,
Your 'lines' are demarcations of joy, indicators of levity, signals of sinful saturdays, and badges of play.

I don't trust people without smile markers. You shouldn't either.

  2. Ali - My grandma would say that you are just too skinny ;-) If you get some meat on those bones, the lines will plump up! (unfortunately she never had to say this to me) You are beautiful - embrace the lines! I do remember the pout -- you were good at it.

  3. My mother never forgot this, and so I never will either; when I was little I told her I liked the laugh lines on her face the best because when she laughed or smiled her face was hugging itself.
Don't worry about what's on your face, love so that noone ever forgets what it looks like.

  4. Girlie, laugh lines are sexy. Seriously!

Smiling beats the hell out of a sourpuss face.

  6. I think you are so pretty! Don't let your crazy thoughts rule your life. And like everyone else said...a life of smiling is worth it, so keep on smiling!!! :)

  7. Better to have smile lines than none from lack of joy!
